Welcome

Welcome on the offical website of GREENSMARTMED, a project financed by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme under the Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission!

We are a team of changemakers committed to sustainable development. For the past two years we have been actively supporting the transition towards greener manufacturing by strengthening innovation ecosystems and fostering cooperation among innovation actors of the quadruple helix (SMEs, research organisations, business support structures, and public authorities) across the Mediterranean.

Our goal is to capitalize the results previously developed by the Interreg Med GREENOMED and finMED projects, leveraging the Interreg Med GREEN GROWTH Community.

During our journey we developed, tested, and made transferable a new integrated methodology and related toolkit to enhance transregional cooperation among innovation actors (especially in Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Bulgaria, Slovenia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Portugal) — thereby creating a European community able to uptake innovations for a green and resilient manufacturing value chain.

Our aim is to turn SMEs’ sustainability challenges into business development opportunities, by connecting them with Regional Authorities, and facilitating their participation in EU funded projects, thus contributing to Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialization (RIS3).

From January 2024 to June 2026, GREENSMARTMED operated as a Test Project. Building on the successful validation of its methodology, it was officially selected to adapt and transfer its results in four new Mediterranean territories: Portugal, North Macedonia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

who we are

Our partnership brings together organisations committed to sustainability, innovation, and smart specialisation across the Mediterranean (Current partners: University of Bergamo, CERTH, CUEIM, AFIL, E-ZAVOD, SERDA, Textile Trade Association – Textile Cluster, Technopolis Group Portugal).

Building on previous and ongoing Interreg projects, we combine different experiences, technical expertise, sectoral and regional knowledge, and strong links with innovation actors across the four helixes.

We also rely on a strong community of supporters which actively broaden the project’s reach and amplify its impact on public authorities and policy development.

Our Focus

GREENSMARTMED focuses on the current European sustainability and resiliency challenges in line with the trend towards a green and resilient manufacturing.

In particular, it addresses:

  • The SMEs shortage of financial resources and difficulties in accessing finance as barriers to their green innovation.
  • The need for an ecosystem approach allowing a contamination and knowledge transfer between quadruple helixs stakeholders.
  • The lack of SMEs awareness about Smart Specialization Strategies priorities and directions on R&I at regional level.
  • The mayor sustainability challenges faced in the manufacturing sector: machinery, textiles, plastics, agri-food and mobility & batteries.
  • The need to increase the participation of SMEs as partners in the European funding Programmes to implement more effective project in facing their needs.
